Marrakesh is a small city in inland
Morocco. It is the residence of Morocco's king (Mohammed VI) and so it's
always very well-maintained. Lots of parks, boulevards, and several
palaces of historical significance, as well as the incredible Place Jem 'al Fna,
where thousands gather every night. During the last 10 years there's been
a HUGE construction boom, and a lot of Americans and Europeans are visiting.
According to a new English-language magazine there, in the next year over 10
thousand anglophone ex-pats are moving there, while 100 4- and 5- star hotels
are under construction. Plus an awesome writer/composer named Paul Bowles
lived there for a while (highly recommend Under A Sheltering Sky)
The Jardin Majorelle. That's a
beautiful garden and museum built by an eccentric French painter who lived
in Marrakesh during the 20's. Garden reminds me a little of the
Hagiwara Tea Gardens in San Francisco.
From the ceiling of one of the many
rooms in the Palace of Bahia ("Wonder"). The whole place is filled
with beautiful stuff, it reminds me of Baroque palaces. Puff Daddy had
a couple parties here.
I found this travel bum selling "Good Karma"
outside a discount humus shop. No, wait, that's my sister, who took
time out from her busy life studying in Spain to visit me in Morocco.
The king was in town so there were Moroccan
flags everywhere. People were hanging around here at Place De la Liberte, waiting
for his motorcade to come through.
